Denmark's energy consumption increased in 2021 and emitted more CO2

Energy consumption increased in 2021 after the 2020 shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, without reaching the same level as in 2019.

Energy consumption picked up again in 2021 after a decline due to major corona shutdowns in 2020. Actual energy consumption increased last year by 4.8 percent. driven by a large increase in coal consumption of 39.0 percent. and an increase in renewable energy of 13.8 percent.

In the opposite direction, the consumption of oil products and natural gas pulled, falling by 4.3 percent. and 1.1 percent, respectively. However, energy consumption was still not at the same level as in 2019. The figures appear from the preliminary energy statistics for 2021, the Danish Energy Agency said in a press release.

The large increase in coal consumption can be attributed, among other things, to the fact that there was a greater production of electricity at Danish power plants caused by a combination of the net import of electricity falling from 25 PJ to 18 PJ and wind turbines producing less electricity in 2021.

As a consequence of the increased activity in society with the resulting increased consumption of fossil fuels, actual CO2 emissions from energy consumption increased by 1.5 percent in 2021.

Last year, Denmark produced 55 percent of the energy Danes themselves consumed, while the rest was imported. Domestic energy production was largely unchanged from 2020 to 2021, as the decline in North Sea oil and natural gas production was offset by increased renewable energy production.
