LEMVIG: Late Thursday afternoon, the installation ship DEME Innovation arrived in Thyborøn just before storm Otto to begin installation work on the Vesterhav Syd and Nord wind farms. Now the hope in Thyborøn is that it can herald a new era that can boost the entire development in Lemvig Municipality.
- We feel that this is a seal of approval for Thyborøn Port. It fits well with the vision we have of tying the infrastructure together. Here I am thinking of the black one in the form of the motorway that goes to Holstebro north and the blue infrastructure with a harbor depth that is now 11 meters, says Lemvig's mayor Erik Flyvholm (V) and adds:
- Without the harbor deepening, this project could not be done, because then DEME could not come here at all. The port is now designed to the required 11 meters.
He also sees the port's location as a contributing factor to its success.
- We are lucky that we are an east-facing port on the west coast, where there is shelter and at the same time ice-free all year round, explains the mayor.
Jutland common sense
The port's hinterland area has also been expanded - this is required to bring large shipping projects for offshore wind farms to the city.
- We already have quite large areas, and we can make them even larger if demand arises, says Erik Flyvholm.
There is already preparation for more when the need arises.
- We will take the investments gradually, as we can gape at them and the need is there, he concludes.
The importance of having brought it in first shipping project to Thyborøn, he does not hide either.
- We have been chosen, and it makes me proud because it is the first time. I see this as a huge opportunity for all of Northwest Jutland. Now we must of course deliver the goods, and when DEME can use us, it may be that others will also choose us, says Erik Flyvholm.
He also sees the city's offshore service cluster as an asset in choosing Thyborøn.
- We have the skilled maritime North Sea Offshore Service Group, which can supply the well-trained workforce, he says.
Power from the wind farms
Both the shipping of wind farms, and the power that will later be brought ashore in the municipality. The mayor sees this as a lever for something else.
- The electricity from the Thor wind farm will come ashore here in the municipality, because we are in a favorable location. At the same time, Skovgaard Energy will produce green ammonia in Ramme before the end of the year with PtX. They have promised me that, says Erik Flyvholm.
Then the lever of shipping projects and energy is ready.
- Our challenge here is settlement and attracting knowledge jobs, because we are good at giving our young people a youth education, so they travel away to study. When the energy comes, prosperity will be created, regardless of whether it is in the warm Gulf countries or in Norway. If we can get a piece of that, it could be a game changer for our settlement, says Erik Flyvholm.
Thyborøn's start as a shipping port has sparked another one in Lemvig Municipality.
- We have something we believe in here, says Erik Flyvholm.
