Boom in electricity and gas prices boosts Ørsted's results

Lower wind speeds mean that not as much electricity has been produced from Ørsted's wind farms.

Ørsted has benefited from the recent sharp increase in gas and electricity prices. In Ørsted's business division Bioenergy & Other, sales in the third quarter increased by 54 percent to DKK 6.6 billion.

At the same time, operating profit has tripled to DKK 1.2 billion. This is shown in the third quarter accounts. According to Ørsted, gas prices have been six times higher than normal, while electricity prices have been three times above normal.

- This was due to extraordinarily good results from our combined heat and power plants and high earnings from our gas business, Ørsted writes in the accounts.

Although Ørsted has received more money in its coffers due to the rising electricity and gas prices, it is not enough to ensure overall progress for the group, which is betting on a future with a focus on wind and solar energy. For the entire Ørsted Group, operating profit fell in the quarter, falling by almost DKK 400 million to DKK 3.4 billion.

This is due, among other things, to the fact that there has not been as much wind and therefore not as much electricity has been produced from the wind farms that Ørsted owns. Earlier this year, Ørsted announced an ambition to quadruple its position within renewable energy by 2030.

The company will build 50 GW in the coming decade. These are primarily wind farms, but also solar farms. Up to now, Ørsted has secured contracts that mean that it can reach 18 GW, Ørsted states in the accounts.
