With Glostrup as the last of the country's 98 municipalities on board the Climate Alliance, there is now, together with the five regions, a united vanguard to combat climate change. The climate alliance is a five-year partnership between Realdania, KL and the five regions, with the green think tank Concito and the global city network C40 as knowledge partners.
- Glostrup is already well underway with the green transition, among other things by reducing energy consumption in the municipality's properties and by strengthening sustainable public transport. Our district heating rollout is also well under way. With the climate action plan in hand, and together with the rest of the municipalities, we can work even better to make a green and noticeable difference for our citizens and future generations, says mayor Kasper Damsgaard (S).
The climate alliance is seen as a development space for knowledge sharing and collaboration, and the municipalities commit to an ambition for what is described as a "climate-neutral and climate-robust future" by 2050 at the latest.
Signal and engagement
The plans in the alliance have an overall goal of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases across all sectors by 76 percent in 2030 – at the same time that the municipalities must adapt to the consequences of climate change such as rising sea levels, extreme rain and heat waves.
- That 98 municipalities are now involved sends a strong signal about the local commitment to tackling climate change and creating a sustainable and green future, says chairman of the Climate Alliance and mayor of Vejen Frank Schmidt-Hansen (K).
That all the country's municipalities and regions collaborate to develop climate action plans and deliver the necessary local climate action is unique in an international context. In order to inspire others, a Danish delegation was invited to the UN climate conference COP28 to talk about the local climate action and the special nature of cooperation across the whole country.
When the individual municipalities make climate action plans, they start from an internationally recognized method, which was developed by the global urban network C40 Cities and translated into a Danish context by Concito and C40. Until now, 96 municipalities have action plans approved here and adopted by their own city council.
