The conditions are not in place for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Putin said this, according to the state-run Russian news agency Tass on Thursday.
US President Donald Trump and Putin are to meet soon. Trump reportedly also wants the two to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shortly after. But according to the Russian president, a meeting between Putin and Zelensky is not imminent.
- I have repeated that I have nothing against it as such. It is possible, says Putin.
- But certain circumstances must be created for it to be possible. Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go before such circumstances are created, the Russian president continues.
He does not immediately elaborate on what circumstances he means. But Russia has previously made demands that Ukraine has not been willing to meet.
According to the AFP news agency, Putin also says that the United Arab Emirates could host the summit between Putin and Trump, for which a specific date has not yet been set.
Putin advisor Yuri Ushakov says that the goal is for the meeting to take place next week, but according to the advisor, the United States and Russia are still working on the final details.
- Following a proposal from the American side, an agreement was essentially reached to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days, that is, a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, says Ushakov.
- We are now starting the concrete preparations together with our American colleagues, he says, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
There has not been a summit between the presidents of the United States and Russia since Joe Biden met with Putin in June 2021 in Geneva.
