Green Power Denmark: Political uncertainty has stalled the gas phase-out

New figures show that Denmark's gas consumption is not falling fast enough. Green Power Denmark calls for a clear electrification plan.

The phasing out of black gas in Denmark is happening far too slowly if we are to achieve either the national or European climate goals. This is shown by new figures from Green Power Denmark, which urges politicians to adopt a clear electrification plan.

In 2022, the government and the parties in the Danish Parliament agreed that all gas should be green by 2030, and that no homes should be heated with gas after 2035. But this development has stagnated, according to Green Power Denmark's calculation, which shows that the decline in natural gas consumption during the energy crisis is no longer continuing. Thus, the calculation shows that in the first half of 2025, gas consumption was 11.3 TWh, which is roughly on par with the level in 2022, when consumption was 12.2 TWh.

- The phasing out of gas is progressing slowly. Our calculation shows that the decline in natural gas consumption that we experienced during the energy crisis has stagnated. One of the biggest problems is that politicians have not clearly announced when Danes can expect the gas to be turned off. This uncertainty makes it difficult for households to plan their private finances and decide when to replace gas with heat pumps or district heating, says Martin Ingerslev, chief economist at Green Power Denmark, to the organization's website.

Climate projections from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities support the assessment. According to the forecast, 268,000 households will still use gas in 2030, compared to a previously estimated 130,000.

Green Power Denmark emphasizes that a green choice can yield major economic gains. A household can save around DKK 10,000 annually by switching to a heat pump. The organization welcomes the government's agreement on offshore wind and looks forward to the European Commission's plan for increased electrification as part of the REPowerEU strategy.

- There is a need for a political plan that sends a clear signal to consumers and encourages them to choose green electricity instead of fossil fuels, says Martin Ingerslev.
