In line with the green transition, renewable energy accounts for an increasingly large share of the electricity in the Danish electricity grid. This also creates a growing need for system services, because energy from, for example, solar and wind varies more.
A giant battery of two MW and 2.2 MWh, which EWII has recently put into operation, can help with this, and thus improve the security of supply west of the Great Belt.
- With system services, we ensure a balance between the energy that is produced and the consumption of electricity. Our battery captures the small fluctuations in the grid and switches on very quickly, so that it sends power into the electricity grid or stores energy as needed. In this way, we help prevent the electricity grid from being overloaded and power outages from occurring, explains Claus Møller, Director of Commercial Infrastructure at the EWII Group.
Approved by Energinet
The battery plant, located at Lindø Offshore Renewables Center on Funen, is both Ewii's first battery plant, but also the first plant in Western Denmark that has been prequalified by Energinet to stabilize the electricity grid with system services. This is stated by Ewii in a press release.
- Our battery plant has come through Energinet's eye of the needle, so EWII can now help ensure the balance in the electricity grid and contribute to avoiding power outages in Western Denmark. An area where very few have bid for the task, and where one is otherwise forced to draw on foreign suppliers, says Claus Møller.
The prequalification at Energinet is an extensive process, and here EWII has had to document the battery's capacity and performance, while ensuring a high level of data security.
- The green transition is creating major changes in the electricity system in recent years. Many of the power plants that have been ready behind the scenes for decades and have been able to quickly turn up and down and ensure the balance in the electricity system are closing or running for fewer and fewer hours. That is why we need new suppliers and new technologies that can ensure that there is always power in the sockets. Here, batteries are one of many new solutions that are needed, says Kia Marie Jerichau, area manager in Flexibility and Balancing at Energinet.
Want to help other companies
The energy company now wants to share the extensive process that Ewii has gone through in connection with the approval of the battery plant with others in the industry.
- There is a need for more system services, but many companies are holding back because they do not have the expertise in-house. At EWII, we would therefore like to assist other companies that are considering being prequalified by Energinet. This is important for the energy system of the future, says Claus Møller.
The group also plans to build more battery plants that can help stabilize the electricity grid.
On Bornholm, EWII will install a huge battery energy storage system of 30 MW and 43 MWh next year, and in the Triangle areas, the group will establish more batteries of three MW and 3.5 MWh.
