The energy group Ewii is investing in giant batteries in the Triangle area, on Funen and on Bornholm, the batteries are intended to play a role in the green transition.

In total, EWII is investing a three-digit million amount in battery systems with a total capacity of 47 MW and 62.7 MWh distributed across a number of locations in both the Triangle area, on Funen and on Bornholm. Giant batteries that can be charged and store electricity when there is overproduction on the electricity grid.

- The large battery capacity that we are now establishing will be part of the solution for a comprehensive system for renewable energy. We are multiplying the megawatts and megawatt hours that are available on batteries in Denmark because we insist on being an important part of the solution of the future in collaboration with other players, says CEO of the Ewii Group, Lars Bonderup Bjørn.

In mid-April, EWII bought 50 percent of by the energytech company FlexShape, which develops flexibility solutions for the energy market. This purchase is closely related to the group's battery investment, as FlexShape will, among other things, develop the advanced software systems for the batteries.

- It is crucial that we have the systems so that the batteries can respond quickly with charging or discharging, and that they can constantly be adapted to the production in the electricity grid. Therefore, the entire project also requires an investment in the technical set-up, says Lars Bonderup Bjørn.

Denmark's largest battery system to be located on Bornholm

The largest of EWII's batteries will be located on Bornholm at the high-voltage station near Hasle, where it will have the capacity to store very large amounts of green electricity. In fact, enough to cover the entire island's consumption for a shorter period.

- The battery on Bornholm has a capacity of 30 MW and 43 MWh, and it occupies a solid first place as Denmark's largest battery. The system has a capacity that alone could keep the entire island's electricity grid running for an hour. At the same time, the location is absolutely ideal, so close to the wind power production in the Baltic Sea, says Director of Commercial Infrastructure at Ewii, Claus Møller.

Hitachi Energy will deliver the large battery energy storage system (BESS). For the supplier, this is also a battery system at the large end of the scale.

- For Hitachi Energy, it is extremely positive that we can contribute with innovative technologies that can accelerate the green transition for the people of Bornholm, says Claus Madsen, Director of Hitachi Energy Denmark.

According to the plan, the battery on Bornholm is ready to be put into operation in the summer of 2024. In addition, EWII will install a two MW battery on Funen during the summer of 2023, and from the autumn, Ewii will establish five three MW batteries in different locations in the Triangle area.
