The conditions that will realize a quadrupling of the total electricity production from solar and wind on land by 2030 have fallen into place. Thus, a broad majority in the Danish Parliament presented a new agreement on Tuesday, which, among other things, stipulates that the state, based on ongoing application rounds, will be able to designate specific areas for larger energy parks.
- In the future, we will need much more electricity for electric cars, heat pumps and for the business community. Right now, renewable energy on land is moving too slowly, so I am pleased that so many parties are taking responsibility for increasing both the volume and the speed, says Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) in a press release.
But in order for projects not to be delayed due to restrictions in relation to, for example, the environment, a new law will be proposed in the spring of 2024 that will grant energy parks special conditions.
The agreement states that the law will relax considerations for land protection and thus make it easier and faster to obtain permits and exemptions for the installation of renewable energy.
- Denmark is a small country, and there is a shortage of space. Therefore, we must accept that some wind turbines or solar cells will have to be placed near natural areas. But we do not compromise with vulnerable natural areas, and we take extensive consideration of nature and the environment when establishing energy parks, says Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke (S).
Will occupy more than twice as much area
Overall, a quadrupling of production will require up to 1.3 percent of Denmark's land area, compared to around 0.5 percent today. According to the agreement, the neighbors and local communities that contribute land to the energy sector must be able to feel the economic benefits of wind turbines and solar cells.
The parties, which in addition to the government include the SF, the Conservatives, the Unity List, the Radical Left and the Alternative, have therefore agreed on a significant increase in, among other things, the green pool compensation scheme. In total, around 2.5 billion kroner will go to neighbors and local communities.
- We all have a responsibility for the historic transition to green energy. But we must ensure that neighbors of future energy parks are properly compensated for the responsibility they assume. That is why I am of course pleased that with the agreement we are ensuring better compensation locally. Both with higher cash benefits for the neighbors and with extra funds for initiatives in the local area. The new energy parks are also a good opportunity to create development and more jobs locally, says Minister for Urban and Rural Areas Morten Dahlin (V).
There must also be the possibility of combining the parks with Power-to-X plants and relevant companies that can create development locally, it says.
