US halts some arms deliveries to Ukraine
The United States is halting some arms deliveries to Ukraine over concerns that its own stockpiles have become too small.
An unnamed Pentagon official told the Associated Press (AP) on condition of anonymity.
According to the official, a review of military stockpiles shows that the number of certain types of weapons promised to Ukraine is too low in the United States' own stockpile.
The official did not specify which specific weapons are being withheld.
The information that some arms deliveries are being halted is confirmed in a statement by White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly.
- The decision aims to put US interests first after a review of our country's military support and assistance to other countries around the world.
However, there is no reason to doubt the US armed forces, she emphasizes.
- The strength of the US military is undisputed - just ask Iran, says Kelly, referring to US missile strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June.
According to the AP, the decision reflects a new priority under US President Donald Trump, who took office in January. Ukraine had been promised certain weapons during his predecessor Joe Biden's time in office.
The halt to deliveries of certain weapons is a blow to Ukraine, which this year has entered the third year of the war with Russia.
Recently, Russia has carried out some of its largest airstrikes on Ukraine in the war, which has shattered hopes of a breakthrough in the negotiations for a ceasefire that Trump has expressed a desire for.
Negotiations between the parties have stalled.
Since Russia invaded its neighboring country in February 2022, the United States has provided weapons and military assistance worth over $66 billion - 417 billion kroner.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Denmark has donated approximately 67.6 billion kroner to Ukraine in military support.
