Large companies are preparing for a complete or partial gas shutdown

The Confederation of Danish Industry is establishing a forum for the 50 largest gas-consuming companies that may be affected by gas cuts.

Large companies such as Arla, Danish Crown, Novo Nordisk and Carlsberg are preparing for the possibility of being hit by a complete or partial gas outage. This is according to industry director Troels Ranis, DI Energi.

- The companies are taking the situation very, very seriously. Contingency plans have been drawn up for how to handle the possibility of a complete or partial gas outage, he says.

The 50 largest gas-consuming companies in Denmark could be affected if the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline does not reopen after ten days of maintenance. If European gas storage facilities are not filled, gas will be prioritized according to a key, with households coming first.

This could mean that no gas - or only limited amounts of gas - will be left over for so-called unprotected companies. Around 50 Danish companies within the manufacturing of food and building materials, among other things, belong to that category.

Likely scenario

According to Troels Ranis, it is a likely scenario that Russia will completely shut off the gas. This has prompted DI to set up a special forum for companies that risk being affected.

- We are probably looking at a real gas crisis, where there is no access to the gas that companies need. This means that the gas will be rationed, and companies risk being completely or partially closed, says Troels Ranis.

If there is a surplus of gas when households and, for example, hospitals have received their share, the unprotected companies will be able to be considered based on special criteria:

- The authorities have determined that priority will then be given to whether the company is a company with critical importance to society. It is based on criteria that concern, among other things, life and health, food safety and animal welfare, says Troels Ranis.

Many of the companies have been in the process of restructuring their energy supply to become independent of gas.

- Some have acquired oil boilers, and others are in the process of electrifying. But there is also a delivery time for this type of energy plant, and therefore it cannot happen from one day to the next, says Troels Ranis.

The members of the special forum will be continuously briefed on the situation, and meetings will be held in which the authorities will also participate.
