MAN Energy Solutions has contributed to the development of the world's most powerful methanol engine for ships to date. The engine, called the MAN B&W 12G95ME-C10.5-LGIM, will be installed on 12 container ships. This marks an important step in the green transition of global shipping, the company said in a statement.
The first of the 12 engines is due to be delivered in June 2025 and built in China. It will be used by the Asian shipping companies Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. and COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd. Each engine has an output of over 82,000 kilowatts and can run on both traditional marine fuel and conventional and green methanol.
Man Energy Solutions has already delivered over 230 engines that can run on methanol. However, the new version is the largest and most powerful to date.
- This latest, remarkable milestone – the world's most powerful methanol engine – is a clear expression of just that. By harnessing the potential of methanol, we are bringing shipping closer to completely zero-emission solutions, and we expect methanol to play a prominent role as a fuel in all parts of the industry in the future, says Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions.
