The parties in the Danish Parliament re-elect Søren Gade (V) as Speaker of the Danish Parliament despite criticism in the Esbjerg Port case. This is clear after a vote in the Danish Parliament's Chamber in connection with the opening of the Danish Parliament. The re-election is taking place this time without the support of the Unity List and the Alternative. This is the first time that he does not have the support of all parties as Speaker.
Therefore, it is a both grateful and humble Søren Gade who is entering his fourth term as Speaker.
- It is an honor and a joy to be allowed to continue in this profession. I greatly appreciate the trust that many of my colleagues have shown in me.
- I am also aware that not all party groups have nominated me for the position. I therefore approach the task with even greater humility, he says from the podium.
Has been criticized for dual role
Søren Gade has been criticized for holding the position of paid chairman of the board of directors of the Port of Esbjerg, while also being chairman of the Folketing.
The criticism has been that the two chairman roles could cast doubt on his competence, as the Port of Esbjerg was in the running to become the place where billion-dollar warships were to be built. The Port of Frederikshavn ended up winning the task.
For Søren Gade, it has been important to "establish that as chairman of the Port of Esbjerg you neither have nor will have influence on decisions about where warships are built". He wrote this in a post on Facebook in June.
He has also emphasized several times that he had been approved for the dual role as chairman of the Port of Esbjerg by the Folketing's Rules of Procedure Committee. The committee reconfirmed in May that he could continue in the dual role.
- It is my intention to be the chairman of all members. Regardless of whether they have supported my re-election or not. The fact that we do not always agree is not a problem, but a characteristic of a living democracy, was also stated by Søren Gade on Tuesday.
The Speaker of the Folketing is tasked, among other things, with leading the work of the Folketing together with the Presidium of the Folketing. The Speaker chairs the meetings in the Folketingsalen and must ensure that the legislative work is carried out according to plan and that the members of the Folketing have the best framework for their work.
Søren Gade has been the Speaker of the Folketing since he was first elected in 2022.
