The state-owned Russian energy company Gazprom will, as announced, suspend gas supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline from August 31 to September 3.
The shutdown will last 72 hours - more precisely from 03:00 Danish time on Wednesday to 03:00 Saturday. This is according to Seeburger, a platform that provides information on energy markets. The shutdown is due to maintenance work. It was already known that the shutdown would take place. But the exact time was not known.
German politicians have repeatedly said that the reduction in gas deliveries is an attempt by Russia to punish Germany for its stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and for the sanctions imposed on Russia.
Second shutdown in a few months
Nord Stream 1 was also closed in July due to maintenance work. It was reopened on July 21. Gas supplies have since been at 20 percent of maximum capacity. As with the latest closure, there are doubts this time about whether supplies will be resumed.
Gas supplies via other pipelines have also been reduced since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Germany's dependence on Russian gas has raised serious concerns about shortages for the many who use gas to heat their homes during the cold winter months.
In Denmark, electricity prices have risen significantly due to uncertainty about continued gas supplies.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday that gas storage facilities are fuller than expected at this time of year, dpa reports. He therefore does not expect serious problems with energy supplies this year.
