The state-owned Russian gas company Gazprom will further reduce gas supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline from Wednesday. According to the company, the reason is maintenance of a gas turbine. The company announced this on Monday, according to the Reuters news agency.

The daily gas supply via the gas pipeline will be reduced to 33 million cubic meters from Wednesday. This corresponds to approximately 20 percent of maximum capacity. It is not clear how long the further reduced supply of gas will last.

When Gazprom reopened the gas supply to Germany, which sends the cheap Russian gas to other parts of Europe after ten days of maintenance last week, the announcement was that approximately 67 million cubic meters would be delivered daily.

Gazprom's latest announcement means that deliveries to Europe will be roughly halved from Wednesday. When the gas pipeline is running at full capacity, it can deliver approximately 167 million cubic meters of gas per day. Nord Stream 1 normally transports 55 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea every year. That is enough to supply about 26 million European homes.

Germany: "No technical reasons for reduction"

In June, gas supplies via the pipeline were reduced to 40 percent of normal levels. Russia explained at the time that the reason was a shortage of components. An explanation that was not necessarily bought in Europe.

Major powers in Europe have accused Russia of using gas as a means of blackmail against Europe, because the EU has imposed sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine.

According to Germany, there are "no technical reasons" for the reduced gas supplies from Nord Stream 1, as Gazprom otherwise claims.

Germany is among the European countries most dependent on Russian gas. But several other European countries, such as Italy, are also major consumers of gas that comes to Europe via Nord Stream 1.

Russia is the world's largest exporter of natural gas. Europe imports around 40 percent of its gas from Russia. Nord Stream 1 is a 1,224-kilometer-long gas pipeline that runs from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. It has been in use since 2011
