EU countries have agreed on an agreement that includes reductions in gas consumption. In doing so, the countries are now seriously preparing for a winter in which gas supplies from Russia will be surrounded by great uncertainty.

EU countries will initially voluntarily reduce gas use by 15 percent. But energy ministers have also agreed to introduce a special emergency situation called "union alert". Here it will be mandatory for the countries to reduce consumption. This is stated by the EU Commission in a press release.

That is why the agreement reached in Brussels on Tuesday is important, believes the Czech presidency of the EU.

- Today's decision clearly shows that the member states will stand up to any attempt by Russia to divide the EU by using energy as a weapon, says Czech Minister of Energy and Trade Jozef Síkela, who chaired Tuesday's meeting.

The agreement comes shortly after Russia has taken another step towards limiting gas supplies to the EU. On Monday evening, the Russian company Gazprom announced that it will reduce gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 20 percent of capacity. The supply had already fallen to 40 percent.

If a shortage of gas occurs, it could mean that companies have to stop production. This could lead to both financial losses and job losses. For ordinary citizens, this could mean that you cannot heat your home as usual.
