Equinor has made the largest gas and condensate discovery of the year so far in the Sleipner area in the North Sea. According to the company, the two discoveries, Lofn and Langemann, can be developed to supply energy to the European market through the existing infrastructure. The energy company said in a press release.

The two wells in production license 1140 are located between the Gudrun and Eirin fields. Preliminary estimates show that the reserves may contain between 5 and 18 million standard cubic meters of recoverable oil equivalents, corresponding to 30-110 million barrels.

- This shows how important it is to maintain exploration activity on the Norwegian continental shelf. There are still significant energy resources on the shelf, and Europe needs stable supplies of oil and gas. Discoveries close to existing fields can be developed quickly through subsea facilities with limited environmental impact, very low CO2 emissions from production and good profitability. Equinor plans to accelerate such developments on the Norwegian shelf, says Kjetil Hove, Group President of Exploration & Production Norway at Equinor.

He also points out that the Sleipner area is a key hub for Norwegian gas exports to Europe, and that the new discoveries strengthen optimism for further exploration in the area. Together with its partners, Equinor plans to drill five new exploration wells in the future to ensure continued export capacity and value creation.

The license was awarded to Equinor in 2022 through the APA (Awards in Predefined Areas) scheme, and the wells were identified using Ocean Bottom Node seismic, which provides more precise geological data than traditional surface measurements.

The wells were drilled by the rig Deepsea Atlantic, which is now continuing to the next exploration well in the area. Equinor Energy AS owns 60 percent of the license, while Aker BP ASA owns 40 percent.
