A new political proposal from the Liberal Party is raising concerns in the district heating sector, where there is a fear that green projects will be slowed down and Denmark's independence from Russian gas will be postponed. This is stated by the industry organization in a press release issued in response to the proposal.

The Liberal Party proposes to drop the requirement to phase out gas boilers in 2035. Danish District Heating warns that this could have serious consequences for both climate goals and security of supply.

- The district heating sector and the municipalities have taken on a large and important task from the government to create district heating projects so that we can phase out gas for heating in Denmark, which we can see is working every day, as more and more homes switch to district heating. If doubts are cast about these projects, they will not come to fruition and we will never reduce gas consumption in Denmark. Not even to a level where, on the other hand, there will only be green gas in the pipes by 2030, says Kim Mortensen, CEO of CEO of Dansk Fjernvarme.

He calls for faster political clarifications and wants the already planned negotiations on the green transition of residential heating in 2026 to be brought forward.

According to the industry association, many municipalities are currently working on rolling out district heating and converting gas-heated homes, including in Tårnby, Dragør, Holbæk and Vestegnen. If these projects are not implemented, there is a risk that gas consumption will remain too high for the share of green gas to cover the need.

Dansk Fjernvarme also warns against using the limited amount of biogas for individual heating, where there are cheaper and more climate-friendly alternatives. The biogas should instead be reserved for industry and for electricity production during periods of low wind and solar energy.
