The Liberal Party will drop the goal of phasing out gas boilers in homes by 2035.

This is according to party chairman Troels Lund Poulsen.

He believes that the climate argument for a hard deadline has disappeared, since CO2 emissions from gas boilers are falling.

- If we carry out the phase-out as planned, we risk leaving thousands of Danish families with a large and unnecessary bill. It makes neither economic nor climate sense when the gas is both Danish and green, says Troels Lund Poulsen in a press release.

In 2022, a broad majority in the Danish Parliament agreed on a political ambition that from 2035 there should no longer be homes in Denmark that are heated by gas boilers.

Replacement of gas boilers

As a transitional arrangement, until gas boilers were completely phased out and replaced with district heating or heat pumps, gas consumption was to be made green, the agreement said at the time.

When reference is made to "green gas", reference is usually made to biogas, which is produced from organic residues and waste products.

In 2023, the share of biogas in the Danish gas system was almost 40 percent, according to the Danish Energy Agency.

According to the Agency, in 2030, it is expected that 100 percent of Danish gas consumption is covered by biomethane, which is an upgraded version of biogas.

Venstre continues to believe that it is a good development that more households are switching to district heating or heat pumps.

But Troels Lund Poulsen wants to give households the opportunity to replace the boiler when it makes sense for them. It could be, for example, when the gas boiler has reached its end of life, it says.

The wrong direction

But if you ask Ulrich Bang, deputy director of the Danish Confederation of Business, the announcement from the Liberal Party is a step in the wrong direction.

The Danish biogas should not be burned in Danish households, but instead used in heavy industry in Europe, he believes.

- Lower gas consumption in Denmark means that we can help our European neighbors by exporting green biogas, which can push Russian gas out of the system, he says in a written comment.
