German minister to increase surveillance after power grid attack

Germany's Interior Minister to expand powers after arson attack to allow digital trails to be followed more quickly.

The German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, will intensify efforts against what he calls left-wing extremists after an attack on Berlin's power grid left thousands without power. The Interior Minister told the German newspaper Bild, according to the dpa news agency.

- We will strike back, and we will not hand over the reins to left-wing extremists or climate extremists, he said.

Alexander Dobrindt also said that he would expand digital powers so that it would be possible to follow digital trails more quickly. The minister did not elaborate on what types of powers he wants to expand. It is a package of measures in the field of surveillance, dpa writes.

According to dpa, around 100,000 people in southwest Berlin lost power after an arson attack on a cable bridge on January 3.

The left-wing group Vulkangruppen has taken responsibility for the attack, which damaged several high-voltage lines. According to the German media Bild, the group celebrated its attack in a letter of around 2,500 words.

- Shutting down fossil fuel power plants is a task that can be done manually. Take courage, the media said.

The group also wrote that the attack was not aimed at private households.

The power outage affected the districts of Nikolassee, Zehlendorf, Wannsee and Lichterfeld. This meant, among other things, that heating systems were turned off on days when it was around freezing in Berlin.

Several nursing homes were evacuated and schools had to be closed. It has previously been reported that around 45,000 households and 2,200 companies were affected by power outages. Three days after the attack, 25,500 households and 1,200 businesses were still without power, dpa has previously reported.

The German capital was hit by a similar attack on two high-voltage pylons in September. This too was apparently politically motivated sabotage.
