The American electric car manufacturer Tesla has faced headwinds in Europe. In the first two months of the year, the company's European sales fell by 49 percent compared to the same period last year. This is shown by a statement from the organization of European car manufacturers, Acea. The news agency AFP writes.

Part of the explanation must be found in the fact that several of the company's models are old. The decline in sales also comes after Tesla's CEO, multi-billionaire Elon Musk, has become one of the biggest supporters of US President Donald Trump.

Musk first burst onto the political scene in the US with significant financial support for Trump in the election campaign leading up to the election in November 2024. This helped make Trump president and Musk head of a new body that will save billions of dollars in the US government budget.

Thousands have been fired so far, while Musk has in turn been criticized by unions. They are trying to stop many of the cuts that have been implemented or planned. Several Tesla dealerships around the US have meanwhile been vandalized in recent weeks, and the company's share price has plummeted over the past month.

In the first two months of the year, 19,046 new Tesla cars were registered in EU countries. This corresponds to a market share of 1.1 percent, according to the organization Acea, according to AFP. Tesla's falling sales figures in Europe contrast with the real development in the number of newly registered electric cars on European soil.

The figures from Acea show that sales of electric cars in EU countries grew by 28.4 percent to just over a quarter of a million in the first two months of the year. Electric cars thus accounted for 15.2 percent. of total car sales during the period.
