REintegrated and European Energy will transform Aalborg into a green energy hub

REintegrate and European Energy are among the Danish participants in the large-scale IPCEI tender for Power-to-X solutions. The two parties will transform Aalborg into "Green CCU Hub Aalborg".

Last week, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities announced that a broad majority in the Danish Parliament has agreed that Denmark will invest 850 million DKK in a joint European project (IPCEI) for Power-to-X. Denmark has nominated six projects to receive a share of the money.

Among the Danish projects are Reintegrate and European Energy, which have submitted the project "Green CCU Hub Aalborg" together with Blue World Technologies.

The project aims to establish a larger e-methanol production at the port of Aalborg, as the first step in a larger green energy hub that will utilize CO2 from, among other things, Aalborg Portland and convert it into the green fuels of the future and will result in an annual production of 75,000 tons of e-methanol, which will make it one of the largest production facilities of e-methanol in Europe.

- I am very pleased and proud that REintegrate, European Energy and our good partners have been selected to represent Denmark at the European level in an area that can help to put us on the world map. There is no doubt that Power-to-X will set the agenda for many years to come for how our society will use the renewable energy that our wind turbines and solar cells deliver in the future, says CEO of European Energy, Knud Erik Andersen.

"Giga-Fuel" in Aalborg

The path is therefore straight for Aalborg to become a large-scale green energy hub in Europe. The project is supported by local parties such as Aalborg Portland and the Port of Aalborg, just as REintegrate has grown out of Aalborg University.

- For several years, we have been working towards this 'Giga-Fuel' fuel plant in Aalborg, which is the first of its kind with large-scale development of e-methanol, which can free the heavy transport sector from oil. With this project, the production of e-methanol will seriously enter the market for, among other things, marine fuel, says Lars Udby, CEO of REintegrate.

European Energy and REintegrate will be responsible for the financial and technical backbone of the project and will be supported by Haldor Topsøe on the technical side. Blue World Technologies will be responsible for the development and demonstration of fuel cell technology, which will effectively utilize the green e-methanol for, among other things, the transport sector. In addition, the project has received statements of support from other major players, including Aalborg Portland and the Port of Aalborg.

At the same time, the plant will be able to supply a significant amount of district heating to Aalborg and thus help support an early phasing out of the North Jutland Power Plant, which uses fossil fuels.

The participating projects will now go through a European matchmaking process with other European projects. The process will clarify how the projects fit into a common value chain and thus whether they can be included in the establishment of an IPCEI across member states.

The government has allocated DKK 850 million for the Danish participation in an IPCEI on hydrogen. The final participation of the Danish projects in the joint European hydrogen project, and thus the decision on state aid, will depend on the matchmaking process and the European Commission's final approval.
