A new, large market may become available to Danish mortgage companies. The government will make it possible for the institutions to finance large offshore wind farms, says Minister of Business and Industry Morten Bødskov (S) to the media outlet Finans.
Currently, mortgage credit institutions are allowed to help finance wind turbines within a limit of 12 nautical miles from the Danish coast, but not outside. With a change in the law, it will be possible for mortgage credit companies to also mortgage projects outside the border, according to the government's plan.
- We need to get out of Putin's clutches (Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, ed.), and it needs to happen quickly. We are therefore opening up the possibility for mortgage companies to help finance offshore wind installations, because it will make it cheaper to build them, says Minister of Industry and Trade Morten Bødskov (S).
Financing other than housing
According to the media, the government expects that this will provide an opportunity to increase mortgage lending by 200 billion. DKK. At the same time, the hope is that there can be "double-digit billion savings" in the construction of offshore wind projects for approximately 300 billion. DKK, which are expected to be on the way.
The Danish Mortgage Bank, which has six member institutions, declares to Finans that it views the proposal positively. The mortgage institutions in Denmark help finance many Danes' home purchases, among other things.
But Carsten Tirsbæk, chairman of the Danish Mortgage Council, points out to Finans that the institutions also help finance areas other than just properties, such as wind turbines, solar cells and electricity grids. Therefore, he does not believe that the area will be completely new for the companies.
