Ørsted's subsidiary Sunrise Wind will file a complaint with a district court in Washington D.C. after the US Department of the Interior put the offshore wind project Sunrise Wind on hold in December.

Ørsted said in a press release.

- Although Sunrise Wind continues to seek to engage in a constructive dialogue with the US administration and other stakeholders to find a quick and sustainable solution, Sunrise Wind believes that the order to suspend construction work is contrary to applicable law, it says.

Ørsted filed a complaint with the same court on January 1 regarding the suspension of Revolution Wind, a similar project. Revolution Wind is about 87 percent complete, while Sunrise Wind is 45 percent complete.

Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind are two offshore wind farms that Ørsted is building off the east coast of the United States.

On pause December 22

The US Department of the Interior announced on December 22 that leases for five major offshore wind farms were being put on hold immediately.

The order means that activities must be stopped for 90 days.

According to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, the reason was national security.

According to the Reuters news agency, the department said that the Pentagon had expressed concern that the movement of the wind turbine blades and reflective towers were causing radar interference.

At the time the order was issued in December, Sunrise Wind was expected to start generating power in October 2026 and to be completed in 2027.

In the press release, Ørsted writes that Sunrise Wind has received all necessary permits, both at the local, state and federal level, after a review over several years.

- Sunrise Wind has spent and committed billions of dollars in trust and has met the requirements of this thorough process, it continues.

The Trump administration has previously intervened in several offshore wind projects in the United States.

In August, Ørsted and its partner Skyborn Renewables were ordered to stop work on the offshore wind project Revolution Wind - also citing national security concerns.

In September, however, a judge ruled in favor of the parties that construction could resume.
