Ørsted and Hofor have entered into an agreement to secure green electricity for part of the upcoming Green Fuels for Denmark project, which will create a production of sustainable fuels in Greater Copenhagen.

The agreement between Ørsted and Hofor means that Ørsted will purchase electricity production from Hofor's upcoming offshore wind farm Aflandshage, which will have an output of 250 MW and is scheduled to be put into operation in 2024/2025.

- European ambitions for renewable hydrogen and sustainable fuels have increased dramatically in the past year, primarily outside Denmark, but we as a country still have the opportunity to make our mark in this part of the global green transition, says Anders Nordstrøm, head of Ørsted's hydrogen activities.

The green power will be used for the second part of the ambitious Green Fuels for Denmark project, where the second phase will be 250 MW for the production of sustainable fuels.

- As a large-scale flagship project, Green Fuels for Denmark is ideally suited to fulfill Denmark's great potential as a producer of sustainable fuels for heavy transport. The agreement with Hofor emphasizes the partnership's strong belief that Green Fuels for Denmark can contribute to significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a new industrial position of strength for Denmark, says Anders Nordstrøm.

Electrolysis, hydrogen ferries and district heating

In addition to Green Fuels for Denmark, the Aflandshage agreement could potentially also cover the power needs from the electrolysis plant that will supply hydrogen to DFDS' proposed hydrogen-powered ferry between Copenhagen and Oslo, if this project is realized.

- If the green transition of our overall energy supply is to succeed, it is important that the major Danish players work together on common solutions. Not least when it makes good sense for both parties. That is why we see great prospects in this long-term agreement, says Jan Kauffmann, Director of Finance and Business at Hofor.

- In my opinion, the next step will be to investigate how the surplus heat that comes out of PtX production can be incorporated into the Greater Copenhagen heating system. In Hofor, we see a good opportunity for a stable supply of district heating at a competitive price. Our district heating system needs this - and at the same time, an interaction with the greatest possible effect for our climate goals can be created.

Green Fuels for Denmark will be built in three phases of 10 MW, 250 MW and finally 1,300 MW in total electrolysis capacity.

The project is backed by a partnership consisting of A.P. Møller - Mærsk, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, SAS, Copenhagen Airports and Ørsted.

Nel, Haldor Topsøe and Everfuel are partners in GFDK's first phase and the development of the second phase. COWI is a knowledge partner on the project. The project is supported by Molslinjen, the Municipality of Copenhagen and the Capital Region of Denmark.
