Ørsted enters into a collaboration that will help biodiversity in the North Sea on its way

A partnership between Ørsted and Ark Nature is testing, as the first project ever, the possibility of restoring vital biodiversity in the ocean as the global transition to renewable energy gathers momentum.

Biodiversity is disappearing at an alarming rate. A problem that is closely linked to the climate crisis. That is why Ørsted is working with the organization Ark Nature on a new project that will restore biodiversity in the ocean for the first time ever as the global transition to renewable energy gathers pace.

Ark Nature is one of the founders of Rewilding Europe and a pioneer in so-called rewilding; nature restoration, which has already been proven to be effective on land. With the collaboration, ARK and Ørsted will combine their expertise to realize a shared ambition to support and nurture healthy oceans that can support a sustainable and diverse ecosystem and a healthy society.

As a first step in the new collaboration, reefs with shellfish that are essential for the ecological restoration of the North Sea will be restored. There are currently very few places in the North Sea where shellfish larvae can create new reefs.

The partnership will test and develop the best ways in which wind farms can provide conditions for new reefs that support biodiversity. Specifically, a marine laboratory for rewilding will be established, where the most suitable location in terms of sustainability will be found, and based on this, a number of promising rewilding initiatives will be developed and implemented.

Experiences from the project in the North Sea will be used to develop the best ways in which the work can be scaled up on a global scale to ensure an overall net positive impact on nature in connection with the construction of offshore wind farms.

- With this new collaboration, it is a great pleasure for me that we can expand our ambitious global biodiversity program. Together with ARK, Ørsted will implement innovative restoration projects and investigate how rewilding can contribute to improving the health of the oceans, and how the offshore wind industry can amplify that contribution, says Rasmus Errboe, Regional Director for Continental Europe at Ørsted, in a press release.

Ørsted has a stated goal that the energy projects commissioned by the company from 2030 have a net positive biodiversity impact.
