Liberal Alliance is out of negotiations on offshore wind

The largest tender for offshore wind turbines in Danish history ended in nothing in December. Now the government is trying again.

The Liberal Alliance is no longer involved in the negotiations on offshore wind. Climate and energy spokesman Steffen Frølund (LA) told B.T.

- The government has not presented calculations on the advantages and disadvantages of spending so much money on offshore wind rather than nuclear power. We cannot therefore support such a prioritization on the inadequate basis available, Frølund told B.T.

A number of media outlets have described that energy companies are being offered up to 62 billion DKK in state aid over 20 years in a new tender for two offshore wind farms in the North Sea and one at Hesselø. The government has not yet confirmed this.

A number of blue parties, including the Liberal Alliance, are advocating for abolishing the ban on nuclear power, which has been a forbidden territory in Denmark for 40 years. In 1985, the Danish Parliament decided that the technology should not be included in Danish energy planning.

Major tender failed

In December last year, the Danish Energy Agency announced that no energy companies had submitted a bid for any of the three offshore wind farms put up for tender in the North Sea.

It was the largest tender for offshore wind turbines in Danish history, and the government initially believed that the state could make money by building offshore wind farms in Danish waters.

Earlier this month, Dina Raabjerg, energy spokesman for the Conservatives, was also not impressed by the billion-dollar bait that is allegedly on the plate.

- I am speechless that it could be so expensive. And I feel sorry for the taxpayers, she told TV 2.

In the previous failed tender, three out of a total of six GW of offshore wind were put up for tender. The government has since lowered its ambitions considerably.

Nuclear power ban to be reconsidered

The issue of nuclear power has been politically debated recently. The governing parties Venstre and Moderates have expressed interest in removing the ban.

The third governing party, the Social Democrats, wants to investigate the possibilities and consequences of nuclear power in Denmark. This was stated by the party's climate and energy spokesman, Jesper Petersen, last week. This happened after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) opened up to allowing the technology.

However, the Social Democrats point out that the party sees wind and solar energy as the best way forward.
