Lemvig Municipality won the KL Climate Prize 2022 on Thursday evening. The prize was presented on stage at KL's Climate & Environment Summit, which is currently taking place in Alsion and Skansehallerne in Sønderborg.

Lemvig Municipality won the prize for setting up solar and wind farms with local support. Examples include the Høvsøre solar plant, where Jysk Energi has developed a model to involve citizens by offering local residents up to 50 percent ownership. Lemvig has managed to combine considerations for nature, climate, people and business development. Other examples are the solar park and PtX at Ramme and the Nees Hede Climate Park.

- Local citizen resistance to the construction of renewable energy is slowing down the green transition in several cases. That is why it is also deeply impressive to see how Lemvig Municipality, with a new co-ownership model, has cracked the code to build energy parks without citizen complaints, which at the same time provide recreational opportunities and support biodiversity and climate, says Birgit S. Hansen (S), chairwoman of the KL's Climate and Environment Committee.

This is the second awarding of the Municipal Climate Award, which KL has established to "give the many green initiatives in the municipalities the attention and recognition they deserve."

41 projects nominated for the award

The judging committee consisted of Annika Agger, associate professor at the Department of Social Sciences & Business at Roskilde University, Brian Vad Mathiesen, professor at the Department of Planning at Aalborg University, Gitte Lillelund Bech, director of Danish Business, Jakob Fritzbøger Christensen, co-founder and director of GRØN and member of the Youth Climate Council, and Lars Tønder, professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen. University.

At the presentation, the committee said that the many nominations testify to a huge dedication and innovation in municipal Denmark to develop concrete initiatives that ensure that we achieve the goal of creating a climate-neutral society and a sustainable future for all Danes.

- The municipalities have taken on climate leadership. Lemvig Municipality has done the same, and they have collaborated with citizens in a new way. I have no doubt that many people can be inspired by their efforts, and that is why it is also a great pleasure to present the award to Lemvig Municipality today. But Lemvig was in an incredibly strong field of nominees this year, and it shows how the municipalities are a strong driving force in the green transition, says Birgit S. Hansen.

The three other nominated initiatives for the Municipal Climate Award were Hørsholm, Odense and Assens.

A total of 41 initiatives were nominated for the award. The recommendations covered a wide range of issues, from the extraction of low-lying soil, to citizens' consumption-based CO2 emissions and to mobility, heat and energy. They are integrated into the Municipalities' Climate Map.
