LEMVIG: 266 meters high and with 2,800 local citizens behind it. This is how you can briefly describe the Thyborønmøllen in Lemvig Municipality. Here, a unique local partnership between the local population, Lemvig Municipality, Thyborøn Port and Vestas has shown the way through popular resistance to renewable energy projects.
- The wind turbine in Thyborøn is a fantastic example of what local involvement, co-ownership and support can mean for the green transition. Here, Lemvig Municipality is really showing the way, and that is why they are also a completely deserving winner of this year's climate award, said Thursday from the chairman of the KL's Climate Action Committee, Frank Schmidt-Hansen (K), when the KL's annual climate award was to be awarded.
- It is no secret that not everyone is equally excited about the prospect of wind turbines in the famous backyard. That is why it is also deeply impressive to see how Lemvig has succeeded in cracking the code and making Thyborønmøllen a joint winner for both the municipality, citizens and business, says Frank Schmidt-Hansen.
The partnership means, among other things, that 2,800 local citizens each own a share of the wind turbine and receive most of the profits.
The wind turbine is also the world's largest wind turbine on land, and has had broad support throughout the entire process. The wind turbine was given the green light in 2023 and was inaugurated in September last year, where 900 citizens showed up.
Winner for the second time
In addition to Lemvig, the final field also consisted of Thisted and Vejle Municipalities.
Thisted Municipalities has been nominated for the Thy Climate Alliance, where, in collaboration with, among others, The local business community and agriculture have succeeded in finding CO2 reductions of 150,000 tons – including by extracting 1,630 hectares of low-lying soil and rolling out district heating to 5 villages.
Vejle Municipality is nominated for the climate village Vandel, which in three years has managed to reduce the city's CO2 emissions by 32 percent.
- It is deeply inspiring and motivating to see how the municipalities have managed to create some truly unique green communities. It really shows how local climate action can move green mountains to such an extent, and why we cannot ignore the municipalities' climate efforts if we as a country are to achieve the goal of the green transition, says Frank Schmidt-Hansen.
With the climate award, KL wants to pay tribute to, collect and disseminate knowledge about all the strong municipal climate efforts that locally show the way towards a greener and more sustainable world. This is the 4th time that the KL climate prize has been awarded.
Among the previous winners are Assens Municipality in 2024, Lemvig in 2023 and Middelfart in 2022.
