The 19 windmills in Kinderdijk were built in 1740 to keep the low-lying area dry and are a symbol of the Netherlands' historical fight against water - now they partially put a stop to new windmills over 200 meters high.

The historic windmills at Kinderdijk in the Netherlands will not face visual competition from modern wind farms. The province of Zuid-Holland and the municipalities of Molenlanden and Gorinchem have decided that no wind turbines taller than 200 meters will be built in the area.  This is what the German Spiegel writes.

The decision was made to protect the iconic windmills, which have had UNESCO World Heritage status since 1997, and to protect the bird species that live in the area. Instead, alternative locations have been found for the modern wind turbines in the two municipalities.

- World Heritage status could be at risk and tourists could be turned away if modern wind turbines disrupt the view of one of the Netherlands' most photographed places, says director of the World Heritage Kinderdijk Foundation Peter-Jan van Steenbergen.

The wind farms are part of the Netherlands' strategy to achieve climate goals and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The municipalities in the area had already decided several years ago to find suitable locations for wind energy, but there was great resistance when the projects were proposed at a distance of six to 12 km from Kinderdijk.
