The government and a broad majority in the Danish Parliament have agreed on an agreement this weekend that ensures more green electricity and accelerates the phasing out of natural gas in Danish homes. The parties have joined hands to quadruple green electricity on land by 2030, build four gigawatts of additional offshore wind by 2030 and phase out natural gas in Danish homes by 2035 at the latest. The agreements are also highly praised by Green Power Denmark.

- It is a historic agreement that takes a big step away from fossil fuels and towards a greener, freer and more electric future. It should be very clear now that we cannot build too much renewable energy - especially not with the growing climate crisis and the current security situation. There are some wild green years ahead, and in the energy industry we are ready to deliver, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark.

To ensure that the ambitions for more green electricity become a reality, the agreement makes it easier to install green energy on land by, among other things, relaxing the restrictions on where wind turbines and solar cells can be located. In addition, a new tender model for offshore wind will be created, which focuses on sustainability and innovation and ensures the pace of expansion. At the same time, a market-driven expansion at sea will be opened up.

- If we are to get rid of fossil fuels, it is useless for it to take years to install a wind turbine or solar cell park, to investigate bottom conditions for offshore wind turbines or to be allowed to reinforce and expand the electricity grid. Therefore, it is good that politicians remove barriers and make it easier to install wind turbines and solar cells. There is still some work to be done - but a lot has been done with this agreement, says Kristian Jensen.

The political agreement also sets an end date for the approximately 400,000 natural gas boilers in Danish homes. Heating the house with natural gas must end in 2035, and in 2026 the parties will revisit the agreement to implement further initiatives that can make heating greener.

- It is good that a concrete plan has been put in place. It is important that we choose the right ones. We must choose the green solutions that are cheapest and best for society and the individual citizen, says Kristian Jensen.
