The Danish Parliament provides more compensation to neighbors for renewable energy

Neighbors of renewable energy will receive more financial assistance and an easier time selling their house in a new parliamentary agreement.

Neighborhood opposition is a significant delay in the expansion of renewable energy, but now a broad majority in the Danish Parliament is trying to overcome the resistance.

In a recently concluded agreement between the government and parties on both sides of the Danish Parliament, compensation and assistance are extended to citizens who have solar cells or wind turbines placed in the local area.

This is stated by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities in a press release.

- The expansion needs more momentum and less disagreement, and we must help this along the way, says Minister Lars Aagaard (M) in the statement.

The government has entered into the agreement with the SF, the Danish Social Democrats, the Danish Alternative, the Danish Unity List and the Conservative People's Party. Specifically, the agreement means that neighbors of solar cells will have their neighbor bonus rate increased by 105 percent.

More rights

Neighbors of solar cells and wind turbines will also have their opportunity to demand that the energy companies behind the green power buy their property if they do not want to live there after construction.

This is done by increasing the distance limit for the right to a put option from 200 to 275 meters for neighbors of solar cells that are larger than 100 MW.

In addition, it must be possible for neighbors to get cheaper electricity. The government has long worked to identify obstacles to the rollout of renewable energy.

This has been done, for example, by setting up the so-called National Energy Crisis Team in 2022, which provided advice on faster rollout of green electricity production.

Friday's agreement is, among other things, based on work that has dragged on for years.

Climate Minister Lars Aagaard believes that they have now "removed the stones in the road that we know of".

- So that wind turbines and solar cells can be built where the demand and local support are present, he says in the press release.

However, the business community is upset that more expenses are being imposed.

The industry organization Green Power Denmark believes that the increased compensation will increase the total costs of the projects, which are already too high.

- The biggest challenge for wind turbines and solar cells on land is not a lack of local support. It is that it has become too expensive to install green energy in Denmark, says Camilla Holbech, director of renewable energy at Green Power Denmark in a press release.
