Right now, there are just seven offshore wind turbines spinning off the coast of the entire United States, so there is potential for many more. Despite the fact that there are few turbines in the water, the ambitions are high and the prospects are promising, and the development of several projects is already underway "over there".

The US national target for offshore wind energy is to achieve 30 GW by 2030 and 110 GW by 2050. If this is to become a reality, many shipping companies will be needed to help.

In an attempt to make Danish companies part of the upcoming American offshore wind adventure, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and a number of Danish companies are embarking on a green export drive this week to try to help Danish companies get closer to the American markets.

A number of Danish companies are on the trip - including the offshore shipping companies Esvagt, Northern Offshore Services, Maersk Supply Service and Cadeler and World Marine Offshore, Danish Shipping Company said in a press release.

- As a Danish shipping company and installer of offshore wind turbines, we are always looking for new business opportunities and from our perspective, the USA is an interesting market with great development potential when it comes to green energy. The current administration has made some ambitious plans for the transition to wind energy, and we naturally welcome that, says Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler.

Great potential

More than 40 Danish shipping companies are involved in offshore wind and an offshore wind farm requires 18 different ship types over its lifetime. Danish offshore shipping companies already have large market shares around the world, and Danish Shipping sees great potential in the American market.

- Denmark has a completely unique position when it comes to offshore wind. As a country, we have been among the first to set up turbines and convert wind into energy, and when our experience with renewable energy is combined with the fact that we are one of the world's largest shipping nations, it is only natural that we are a major player in offshore wind, says Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping Companies.

During the trip, the Prime Minister will also enter into a new alliance on PtX – the green fuels of the future. The PtX alliance will consist of a partnership between various Danish and American business organizations and authorities.

- The need for green fuel will be enormous in the coming years, not least from shipping. We cannot undertake the task from the Danish side alone, and therefore a partnership on PtX and green fuels with the USA is an important piece of the work. We need to share knowledge and experience, and that is why I am pleased that Danske Rederier is part of the new partnership, which can hopefully help to boost development, says Anne H. Steffensen.
