There are significant geographical differences in how many young people choose vocational training as their first priority. This is shown by new application figures from the Ministry of Children and Education. In Morsø Municipality, 46 percent of students have applied for vocational training, while the figure in Gentofte is as low as 4 percent. This is what SMVdanmark writes in a press release.

- It is a pity that we are once again facing relatively low application rates for vocational training, despite the fact that in Denmark we have had a goal for many years that more young people choose the skilled path, says Kasper Munk Rasmussen, head of education at SMVdanmark.

Since 2015, the political goal has been that 30 percent of a youth cohort chooses a vocational training. On average, only one in five students in 9th and 10th grade has applied for that path this year. The proportions are particularly low in the capital area – several municipalities are below 10 percent.

- The current government has done a lot in this area. And in the long term, epx, junior master apprenticeships and mandatory work experience will help to get more people to choose vocational education, but the application figures for this year show that we cannot wait to do more, he says.

SME Denmark is proposing, among other things, a financial incentive to get more young people to choose the skilled path earlier.

- We especially need to do something that will make more students want to try their hand at a vocational education instead of postponing the choice. We propose that students be given an extra monthly tax deduction of DKK 3,000 until they turn 21 when they are enrolled in a vocational training course, says Kasper Munk Rasmussen.

He refers to an analysis from the AE Council, which shows that Denmark will lack over 100,000 skilled workers in 2030.
