Energinet's construction projects have recently been in the spotlight due to the many delays in the company's construction projects. According to the latest quarterly report, 69 percent of the projects are expected to be postponed or delayed, and the average delay is 29 months. Nevertheless, Energinet can now take stock of a record year, in which 29 electricity grid projects were completed and put into operation in 2025. Energinet states this in a press release.
The completed projects include high-voltage substations, cable systems and other facilities in the electricity transmission grid and have a total construction cost of approximately DKK 3 billion. Among the most recently commissioned facilities is a new high-voltage substation at Rødbyhavn, which will supply electricity to the upcoming Fehmarn link, as well as a new 132/50 kV transformer at an existing station at Frederiksværk. With the two plants, Energinet reached a total of 29 commissioning and completed projects in 2025, which is the highest number in the company's history.
- We are far from finished with the expansion of the electricity grid, and the task will only grow from now on. But I allow myself to be both happy and proud that we completed a record number of plants and projects. When we put many new stations, transformers, relays and cables into operation and complete tasks that are important for the expansion of the electricity grid, we will push Denmark's transition to green and independent energy, says Nina Høegh Jensen, Director of Energinet Eltransmission.
Ready for Thor
According to Energinet, the projects mean, among other things, that the electricity grid is now ready to receive around 1,000 MW from the upcoming Thor offshore wind farm in the North Sea when it is ready for full operation in 2027. At the same time, new high-voltage stations are ready to receive electricity production from specific plants totaling approx. 500 MW, while the electricity grid can also supply large consumers with around 400 MW.
The vast majority of completed projects are expansions of the electricity transmission grid. The largest single project is the grid connection of Thor Offshore Wind Farm, which costs over 1 billion. DKK. In addition, a number of smaller but important expansions have been carried out at existing stations as well as projects to support future expansion, including a new spare parts warehouse, temporary connection solutions and the purchase of 40,000 steel road plates.
Not included in the statement are partial commissionings, including the West Coast Link, which will not be fully commissioned until 2026. Energinet also states that the company currently has 184 electricity grid projects in its portfolio, as electricity production is expected to increase fivefold and electricity consumption to triple over the next 15 years.
