After several months of the lowest electricity prices in the middle of the day, it is now once again at night that offers the most cheap kilowatt hours. The shift means that Danes get the most electricity for their money during the quiet night hours.
The shift is happening a few weeks earlier than last year, but still late in the year from a historical perspective. This is because solar cells have been delivering electricity well into the autumn, while windy nights have only now really picked up. This is what the energy company OK writes in a statement.
- At this time of year, when solar cells no longer contribute with the same effect, it is mainly the wind and the low consumption during the night hours that are pushing down electricity prices. Therefore, it will typically be the night that is cheapest for consumers, says Troels Skipper, product manager at OK.
According to OK, electricity is currently cheapest between 02:00 and 05:00. Last week, the average price during these hours was 24 øre per kWh, while the cheapest daytime hours between 12:00 and 15:00 were 31 øre per kWh.
The trend follows the same pattern as in previous years, where the winter months have offered lower electricity prices at night, while daytime hours have typically been the cheapest in the summer months. For consumers, the development means that it can once again pay off to move energy-intensive activities such as laundry, dishwashing or charging an electric car to nighttime.
