
The freight turnover within offshore wind increased by 45 percent at Port of Aalborg in 2025. The growth is related, among other things, to the shipment of large components for offshore wind projects in the USA and the Baltics. This is stated by Port of Aalborg in a press release.
A large part of the activity was thus linked to CS WIND Offshore's completion and shipment of 176 transition pieces for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind offshore wind farm in the USA. Three offshore transformer stations were also shipped from Aalborg for the same project, while two transformer stations with associated foundations were sent to Baltic Power off the coast of Poland.
According to Port of Aalborg, the development shows that the port continues to play a central role for the wind industry in Northern Europe. Almost 60 percent of the port's commercial area of around 5 million m2 is occupied by wind farms. square meters are currently allocated for production, testing and storage of large components for offshore wind in particular.
- This is extremely positive and partly an expression of the fact that we in Aalborg are home to some very strong players in the wind sector, and partly that we are skilled at and continuously invest in our ability to facilitate and service those players so that we can meet their special requirements for areas, carrying capacity and logistics, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl, CEO of Port of Aalborg.
Believing in progress despite difficult times
The positive development comes at the same time that, according to Port of Aalborg, the European wind industry is characterized by both political uncertainty in markets such as the USA and increased competition from Chinese players. At the same time, Port of Aalborg points out that there is growing political interest in Europe in strengthening the production of wind components.
Port of Aalborg highlights, among other things, the EU Commission's proposal that up to 70 percent of the components for publicly supported wind farms should be produced in Europe. Furthermore, the port points to the EU's new port strategy from March, which emphasizes the need for larger port facilities and more space for offshore wind. That is why there is also optimism at the port.
- It is water on our mill. We are among the most scalable wind industry ports in Europe with a framework that makes it possible to quickly offer areas for both production, storage and expansions, and this makes us a very attractive hub for companies throughout the value chain. For example, we have 1.4 million square meters of quayside areas, which we will be able to prepare and bring into play in the relatively short term, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl
To prepare for this potential, the Port of Aalborg handed over an area of 400,000 square meters in 2025 to Siemens Gamesa, which uses the area for storing offshore wind turbine blades. In addition, the port is currently working on a quay expansion, which is scheduled to be completed in 2027 and provide more quayside commercial areas for, among other things, the wind industry.
