Denmark and Germany confirm support for Energy Island Bornholm shortly before deadline for EU funding

There is hope again for the Bornholm Energy Island project, after both Denmark and Germany have clearly announced their support for strengthened energy cooperation across the Baltic Sea. A recent meeting between the two countries' energy ministers Lars Aagaard (M) and Katherina Reiche has confirmed their common desire to cooperate on green energy supply, which will both strengthen security of supply and reduce Europe's dependence on Russian gas. This is reported by TV2 Bornholm.

At Baltic Energy Island, the joint signal is seen as a decisive step towards reaching a concrete agreement. However, it is urgent: An EU grant of 4.8 billion. DKK. could be lost if there is no agreement by the end of June.

- As I see it, things are busy. There is a deadline at the end of June, and you want to have a signature ready. This money is not only financially important - it is also a strong symbol that it is a European project, says Søren Møller Christensen, director of Baltic Energy Island.

Although the project is still officially on hold, he expresses optimism. A new agreement must take into account, among other things, support for offshore wind and financial distribution. On Bornholm, there is already increasing interest from both the business community and researchers, but everything now depends on political agreement before the end of the month.
