The last piles of coal are set to be shoveled into Danish CHP plants in 2028. Denmark will then become the 16th or 17th country in Europe with coal-free electricity production.
Denmark's phasing out of coal, the world's most climate-damaging fuel, is therefore slower than countries we usually compare ourselves to. This is reported by Klimamonitor based on a report published by Oxford University's Our World in Data project.
For example, Norway, Sweden and Belgium are completely coal-free today. France is set to phase out coal in 2022, Great Britain in 2024 and Italy in 2025.
- For a pioneering country, Denmark is relatively late in phasing out coal, says Karsten Capion, senior analyst at the green think tank Concito and former chief analyst at the Climate Council, to Klimamonitor.
Minister: Other countries are better placed
Denmark's mediocre pace of phasing out coal is happening despite the fact that Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen (S) has emphasized several times this year that Denmark is setting a good example with green transition and that coal phasing out is the most important thing to do.
- It is more urgent than ever to replace coal with green energy if we are to keep the Paris Agreement's 1.5 degree target within reach, Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen declared, for example, during COP26.
Klimamonitor has criticized the climate minister for Denmark's mediocre position compared to other European countries.
Dan Jørgensen points out that countries with nuclear power and hydropower have had better conditions than Denmark for the coal phase-out. The climate minister also points out that it looks different when Denmark's consumption of fossil fuels per capita is ranked and compared in relation to GDP.
- Here, Denmark is among the countries with the lowest use of fossil fuels. The coal phase-out in Denmark is well underway, and by 2030 we will have an electricity and heating sector that is close to being completely green, says Dan Jørgensen in a written response to Klimamonitor.
