Canada has launched the process for leasing offshore wind sites, a first step towards establishing the country's first offshore wind projects. This is reported by Renews. The governments of Canada and the province of Nova Scotia have asked the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator to start a pre-qualification process to pave the way for future bidding rounds. The initiative follows the designation of wind energy sites earlier this year and aims to attract qualified investors and involve the public, indigenous peoples and other stakeholders in the design of the bid.
Canadian Energy Minister Tim Hodgson highlights the importance of the project for Canada's energy supply: "Today's announcement is another step towards Canada becoming the preferred global supplier of energy and supporting our long-term energy security."
The initiative builds on the creation of the Major Projects Office, which will accelerate major projects like Wind West Atlantic Energy. The project aims to harness Nova Scotia's offshore wind resources and deliver clean energy to the entire region.
