Energy Cluster Denmark is now making digitalization and cybersecurity an independent focus area in its strategy.
According to Director Glenda Napier and EWII CEO Lars Bonderup Bjørn, this is a necessary step if Denmark is to succeed in the green transition.
"Without digitalization, we cannot succeed in the green transition. And without security in the digital, we cannot maintain the security of supply that is the very foundation of our society," it says in a joint statement.
The background is that energy infrastructure is increasingly a target for cyber attacks, while the EU's NIS2 and CER directives tighten the requirements for companies' cybersecurity.
"We are in a new reality. The Colonial pipeline in the USA was paralyzed by a cyber attack. Ukraine's electricity supply has been the target of repeated digital sabotage actions. Vestas and Mærsk have felt the consequences of cybercrime firsthand. These are reminders that energy infrastructure is a geopolitical target."
Unique data base
Energy Cluster Denmark points out that Denmark is strong with a unique data base and a high degree of trust in data sharing, but that this requires continued innovation and competence development.
Therefore, the cluster will, among other things, use the Digital Energy Hub and new projects like RACE and HeatSync to test digital solutions that both improve efficiency and safety.
"When we extract knowledge from data, we can reduce waste, improve uptime and postpone large investments in cables and excavators. It is both cheaper, greener and smarter. But it requires that we think about safety from the start. Because the more we digitize, the more exposed we become if we do not protect the systems," say Glenda Napier and Lars Bonderup Bjørn.
Digitalization and security of supply are closely intertwined, it is said.
"We can only succeed with both if we create an energy system that is green, reliable and competitive," write Glenda Napier and Lars Bonderup Bjørn and add:
"We can build as many wind turbines and solar parks as we want, but if we cannot control and protect the system, there is too much risk in our energy system. Conversely, we can create the best security in the world, but without digitalization we will not get the full benefit of green energy."
