THISTED / TØNDER: Local referendums can be an effective lever in the green transition. This is shown by experiences from Thisted and Tønder Municipalities, writes DR. Here, among other things, local referendums have shown that early involvement of the local community can be crucial for getting green energy projects off the ground. More specifically, energy associations with local representatives act as mediators between developers and citizens, which creates security in the project phase, as it ensures that neighbors and local communities are heard, and that the projects take into account both landscape, nature and recreational opportunities.
For this purpose, eight energy associations with local representatives have been created throughout Thisted Municipality. "We need to help with dialogue. We need to talk to the project developers about what we can do to accommodate both the citizens, but also ensure that the local community gets as much benefit from a project as possible, instead of it becoming a nuisance," says Kristian Pilgaard, chairman of the Energy Association Midtthy.
And experience shows that the otherwise controversial solar cell and wind turbine projects slide more easily through the political process with a local yes behind them. "It has almost always ended with violent protests from the local population. That's why we just had to think of a new model for this. And the model is actually about involving the citizens, neighbors and surrounding villages very, very early in the process," says Thisted mayor Niels Jørgen Pedersen (V).
