Bornholm moves forward with designation of possible energy park

After the government gave the green light to purchase materials for a land facility for Energiø Bornholm, local politicians will again investigate the possibility of having a state-owned energy park in the area.

BORNHOLM: When the government decided back in January this year to postpone Energiø Bornholm indefinitely and thus the establishment of the onshore facility, the municipal council on Bornholm chose to put the work on identifying an area for an energy park on hold.

However, after Germany has again expressed its interest in collaborating on Energiø Bornholm and the government's subsequent announcement in August to give the green light to the purchase of materials for an associated onshore facility at Sose on South Bornholm, it has once again become relevant for the municipal council to look at whether a possible area should be registered for designation as a state-owned energy park.

However, it will be necessary to find an area with short notice. There is a deadline for possible applications in December 2025, although the Bornholm Regional Municipality applied for a postponement of the application for an energy park until after 2025 in light of the uncertainties surrounding Energiø Bornholm.

However, the application was rejected by Minister for Urban and Rural Areas Morten Dahlin (V), who referred to the fact that the regional municipality could adjust the area in connection with the state's processing of the case.

Big opportunity

A majority of 13 to 10 decided on Thursday to resume work on finding suitable areas around the upcoming energy island-related land facility for the construction of an energy park, according to a report from the municipal council.

- We just don't get opportunities like this very often. I dare to look out and see the perspectives that are in this. They are enormous. And it is perhaps also difficult to understand how big this could become, said Kirstine van Sabben from the Moderates, to TV2 Bornholm.

The Unity Party voted against the proposal, citing the fact that there is still no final clarification regarding Energiø Bornholm, which is a prerequisite for the energy park.

- It must be in the reverse order. First you find out what you want to do, and then you start the process of designating areas and thus also involving the neighbors involved, said the Unity Party's Morten Riis to the local media.
