According to a new analysis from Green Power Denmark, the government's desire to significantly lower the electricity tax over the next two years will make it even more attractive to use electricity for heating - and thus contribute to boosting the green transition. (Archive photo)

Low electricity tax makes the heat pump even more attractive

Low electricity tax makes heat pumps extra attractive: Smaller households can save up to DKK 3,000 annually by switching from oil or gas boilers, shows new analysis from Green Power Denmark.

The government's proposal to lower the electricity tax could give many households with oil or gas boilers extra savings on their heating bills if they switch to a heat pump.

This is shown by a new analysis from Green Power Denmark, which indicates that lower electricity taxes create an economic incentive for consumers to choose green electricity over fossil fuels.

And this applies especially to smaller households with an electricity consumption of less than 1,000 kWh, the analysis shows.

These can save up to 3,000 DKK per year, while couples without children with a consumption of 2-4,000 kWh can save between 500 and 1,400 DKK per year.

This is because heat pumps today only come with reduced electricity tax on the part of electricity consumption that is above 4,000 kWh.

Many smaller households therefore do not fully benefit from the tax advantage, points out Chief Economist at Green Power Denmark, Martin Ingerslev:

- This means that almost three out of four households that currently have an oil or gas boiler do not have the opportunity to get the full tax savings that actually come with choosing a heat pump, she says and continues:

- When the government removes the electricity tax, it is first and foremost about helping consumers in a time of rising prices. But it also supports the green transition and our fight to make us independent of imported fossil fuels. When the electricity tax is reduced to the lowest level, the heat pump will become even more attractive for smaller households over the next two years.

Green Power Denmark highlights that a previous analysis shows that Danish households can save an average of around DKK 10,000 annually by switching from oil or gas boilers to heat pumps - even when investment and operation are included.
