BORNHOLM: The prestige project Energiø Bornholm is breaking the economic framework. This is shown by the updated business case from Energinet, which has just been published. It writes DR.

From this, it can be seen that the construction budget for the electricity infrastructure now ends at 24.3 billion kroner in fixed 2024 prices and thus almost 10.4 billion kroner more than the original estimate.

When the project is completed, Energiø Bornholm will be able to deliver 3 GW of offshore wind from the sea off Bornholm via power cables to Zealand and Germany. The project marks a historic step in the expansion of green energy, but has also proven to be much more expensive than initially expected.

Energiø Bornholm has long been characterized by delays and price increases. Originally, the Danish Energy Agency estimated that the project would result in a socio-economic deficit of around seven billion kroner, and the Economic Wise Men recommended dropping the plans if they could not generate a profit.

But last week, Climate Minister Lars Aagaard (M) announced that there could be new momentum on the way to Energiø Bornholm, as the new German government has shown interest in sharing the project with the Danish government and thus being in agreement on the price of the new green energy.

- We have to negotiate to the bottom, and then we have to take a position. There is no guarantee that you can make ends meet, and that's how it is, the minister said ahead of the negotiations on what the bill and possible state support for a three GW offshore wind farm off Bornholm might look like.
