Energinet has received permission from the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, to take the next step in the development of Energiø Bornholm and invest in electricity infrastructure. This permission has now resulted in contracts being signed with Siemens Energy and NKT for central deliveries to the energy island.
Siemens Energy will deliver four converter stations and one high-voltage station, while NKT will be responsible for the production and installation of submarine and land cables between Bornholm and Zealand. The order for NKT is worth approximately 4.9 billion DKK (approximately 650 million euros), as DOI.dk was able to report earlier Thursday. Energinet does not disclose the specific value of the order for Siemens Energy, but the company informs DOI.dk that the contract value is over one billion euros. Together, these are contracts worth at least DKK 11 billion.
- We are now taking a big step towards a future where offshore wind from the Baltic Sea will be able to supply several million consumers with electricity. There is a lot of work ahead of us and a huge task of building the groundbreaking infrastructure that will make it possible for Denmark to harvest enormous amounts of locally produced energy - energy that will make both Denmark and Europe greener and more independent of external energy, says Thomas Egebo, CEO of Energinet.
The project has been temporarily paused for a long time, but after positive signals from Germany in August, the green light has now been given to resume work. Energinet is working closely with the German TSO, 50Hertz, on the project.
- Today we have taken an important step towards making the vision of the Bornholm Energy Island a reality. We thank the federal government for quickly clarifying key regulatory issues, including liability if the electricity cannot temporarily flow to Germany through an international offshore connection. This clarification is crucial for the supply of offshore wind at Bornholm – and to ensure an efficient offshore connection between the countries around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, says Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz.
Obtains billions in funding
The approval also means that funding from the EU's infrastructure program Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which was awarded earlier this year, can now be released. The funding is 645 million euros – 4.8 billion kroner – and gives the project a significant financial boost.
The funding was conditional on permanent contracts being signed before June 30, but Energinet states that it has been in dialogue with the EU, and has thus ensured that the funding became a reality despite the missed deadline. The support was officially marked on September 4 at a meeting of energy ministers in Copenhagen.
Energiø Bornholm will consist of 3 GW of offshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea south of Bornholm with the possibility of 0.8 GW "overplanting". Originally, the ambition was for Energiø Bornholm to be completed in 2030. Current plans are for the project to be completed in 2034-36 at the earliest.
