According to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Europe's dependence on fossil fuel imports has cost Europe several billion euros during the war in the Middle East.

She said this during a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, writes the news agency dpa.

- Since the beginning of the conflict, gas prices have increased by 50 percent and oil prices by 27 percent. If you convert this into euros, the ten-day war has already cost European taxpayers an additional three billion euros in fossil fuel imports, she says.

That corresponds to around 26 billion Danish kroner.

Has plans for nuclear power

The announcement from von der Leyen comes the day after she presented a plan for nuclear power in the EU.

Here, the Commission President said that the war in the Middle East has highlighted Europe's vulnerable energy market and dependence on fossil fuels. The new European strategy focuses on small modular reactors (SMRs), among other things.

According to the Technical University of Denmark, SMRs are smaller, factory-built nuclear power reactors that, according to the developers, will be more economical and have better safety than traditional reactors.

According to the Commission, the small modular reactors should be in operation in Europe no later than the 2030s.

According to von der Leyen, the SMRs should, together with traditional nuclear reactors, play a key role in a "flexible, safe and efficient" European energy system.

The Commission is proposing various measures to ensure the deployment of SMRs, including making the rules in this area simple and uniform across national borders.

In addition, the EU will create a guarantee of 200 million euros to support investments in innovative nuclear technologies.
