Due to the current security situation, the 6th unit of the patrol ships in the "Diana" class is being re-established. This is being done following a recommendation from Chief of Defence Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard, the Ministry of Defence announced on its website on Friday.

- Water surveillance and the assertion of sovereignty over Danish territorial waters are a high priority for the government.

- I have therefore followed the Chief of Defence's recommendation to re-establish the 6th unit of the "Diana" class. In addition to military tasks, the re-establishment will also contribute to marine environment surveillance tasks, sea rescue and support for the police, says Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen (V) to the website of the Ministry of Defence.

The ships in the "Diana" class are designed to solve tasks such as surveillance and assertion of sovereignty, search and rescue services.

It will take 15 months to re-establish the 6th unit. This means that the patrol ship, which bears the name "Havfruen", can be fully operational by the end of 2026.

Since 2017, "Havfruen" has not been included in the various task solutions carried out by the five current ships in the "Diana" class. Equipment parts have therefore been dismantled and have been used as spare parts on other units, the Ministry of Defence announces.

- The current five units in the Diana class solve important operational tasks on a daily basis, including monitoring and asserting sovereignty over Danish territorial waters. In the current security policy situation, it is crucial that the tasks that the Diana class solves are ensured with the necessary robustness.

- By re-establishing a 6th unit, we will increase operational maritime robustness. At the same time, we will also be able to better support other authorities, such as the police, says Chief of Defence Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard.
