NKT has been selected as the preferred supplier for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) offshore high-voltage interconnection, which will connect the electricity grids in Scotland and England.

The 525 kV cable system is expected to be around 680 km long and includes both onshore and offshore cables.

The project is a key part of the UK’s drive to upgrade the electricity transmission network and ensure clean, reliable energy across the country.

According to NKT, the selection as preferred supplier marks the continuation of the company’s collaboration with SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission and reinforces their commitment to large-scale HVDC projects.

For the transmission companies behind the project, the agreement is an important step towards harnessing Scotland’s renewable energy reserves and strengthening the resilience of the network. The parties are now negotiating a final contract.

- Confirming NKT as the preferred supplier for the cable system is a major milestone for EGL3. The project will form a vital new part of the UK's electricity backbone, transporting clean, home-grown energy to the areas where it is most needed, and contributing to a more affordable and secure energy future, says Mark Brackley, project manager for Eastern Green Link 3 at National Grid Electricity Transmission.
