NKT has broken ground on a new test center at its Karlskrona, Sweden, factory, where the company produces high-voltage cables. The facility is being built as part of a major expansion and is intended to increase testing capacity and enable NKT to handle new requirements for cable technology. NKT reports.

The test center is part of a total investment of 1.3 billion euros, which also includes the cable ship NKT Eleonora. The new facility will support both routine testing, materials research and development of cable technology.

- The breaking ground on our new test center marks a significant milestone in the ongoing investments in Karlskrona. Cable testing is an important component in ensuring a continued high level of quality, and the new facility will strengthen our leading position within high-voltage cable testing. It will also enable us to prepare for testing future cable technologies with new materials, higher voltage levels and potentially longer cable lengths, says Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions Karlskrona at NKT.

The center is being built in collaboration with Hitachi Energy and ABB, who have also supplied equipment for the existing test center. It will be approximately 4,000 square meters in size and is expected to be completed in 2027.

- Our partnership with NKT demonstrates the power of collaborations that accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy future. By providing cutting-edge technology and support, we are improving NKT's testing capabilities and contributing to a more electrified future. Our companies have a long history and I am pleased that we are continuing this journey together, says Tobias Hansson, CEO of Hitachi Energy in Sweden,
